When a Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Has Coffee with an AI Mogul :)))
He was sitting in a corner of a café in Pasadena when he happened to overhear two Caltech alumni talking.
Dario: We’ve developed a rather impressive AI model. It’s called Claude.
Sheldon: Claude? A French name? You build one of the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence systems, and name it after someone who sounds like a wine waiter?
Dario: It’s named after Claude Shannon, the father of information theory.
Sheldon went silent for a few seconds.
Sheldon: All right. I retract my comment. Apparently, someone at your company received a proper education.
Dario: Would you like to try Claude?
Sheldon took the laptop. A few minutes passed.
Dario: Well?
Sheldon: It produced a reasonably good solution. However, it made three errors in its initial assumptions, two in its derivation, and one far more serious mistake.
Dario: Which was?
Sheldon: It said my question was very interesting. My question wasn’t interesting. It was brilliant. There’s a substantial difference.
He nearly spat out his coffee.
Dario: Actually, what worries me most is how we make sure AI that’s smarter than humans still follows our values and rules.
Sheldon: Ah, the alignment problem. I’ve spent years trying to get Leonard to follow the Roommate Agreement. Trust me, you’re underestimating the difficulty.
Dario: We’re also researching how to make AI understand what people truly intend.
Sheldon: Good luck. Penny lived across the hall from me for years and still failed to grasp the elementary principle of knocking three times.
Dario: Still, I believe AI will one day do things that even the greatest human minds cannot.
Sheldon raised an eyebrow.
Dario: We’re building AI systems capable of reasoning and perhaps even surpassing human intelligence.
Sheldon: Artificial intelligence? How fascinating. Humans have finally invented something capable of understanding my intelligence. Unfortunately, it still requires electricity.
Dario quietly opened his laptop and added one more item to the list of problems to solve before achieving AGI:
Make Claude understand Sheldon Cooper.
Perhaps humanity is still a long way from AGI.
Bazinga! :)))
