Don't Just Try to Be the Best

At work, he has noticed how some people are determined to be the best in the room. They want to know more, do better, and receive more recognition than those around them. Sometimes knowledge and experience become things to keep to themselves, out of fear that if others grow, they will no longer stand out

He finds that a little sad. A team’s strength is not merely the sum of each person’s abilities. It also depends on how well people work together, trust each other, and lend a hand. One capable person can solve many problems, but someone who helps others grow can enable the whole team to tackle much bigger ones

Sometimes all it takes is a few extra minutes to explain something difficult to a colleague, to share a small lesson, or to help someone through a rough patch. These gestures may bring no immediate reward, yet over time they help create a place where everyone has room to grow

He has always liked a teaching of Confucius: If you wish to stand, help others stand. If you wish to succeed, help others succeed. There is something quietly generous about seeing another person’s progress not as a threat, but as part of your own journey

Don’t just try to be the best person on a team. Be the person whose presence helps the whole team become better

In the end, someone’s worth may be measured not only by what they accomplish on their own, but also by the good things others go on to do because that person was once there beside them
