When Intelligence Improves Itself
A craftsman can use a hammer to make a better hammer. The work is still slow, because he has only two hands and a day still has only twenty-four hours. If one day the hammer can design the next generation of itself, the story moves into another rhythm
This is the boldest part of Situational Awareness. Leopold argues that when AI reaches the level of automating the work of AI researchers, it does not merely replace one more profession. It begins to join the process of creating systems more intelligent than itself. The product becomes the craftsman, and the craftsman then makes a better product
A research lab today is limited by the number of talented people, the hours they can stay focused, and the speed of experiments that follow one another. Machine researchers could be copied into thousands of instances, work in parallel, reread every result, and not wait until morning to continue. A year of human research could then be compressed into a few months, a few weeks, or even less
People call that acceleration an intelligence explosion. The name sounds like a single moment, but the reality may be a slope. At first AI only helps write code, find papers, and prepare experiments. Later it proposes research directions, catches mistakes, and designs new models. Each step makes research capacity stronger, and that stronger capacity then creates the next step
The slope does not have to be smooth. Experiments still need chips, factories still need to be built, and new ideas can meet a wall that more compute cannot break. Scientific research also depends on the physical world, where atoms do not move faster just because we are impatient. Between an AI that can write a plan and a machine that actually works there is still the distance of materials, manufacturing, and time
Even so, if AI automates a meaningful share of software research, the industry’s clock has already changed. Until now people used computers as a lens to see farther. In this scenario the lens begins grinding new lenses. We no longer only ask how smart the next model will be. We have to ask who is deciding the direction of that self-improvement
What troubles him is not the image of a machine suddenly waking in the night. It is the possibility that everything still happens in well-lit rooms, through thousands of updates that look reasonable, until the pace of progress no longer fits the pace of human thought. If intelligence can help give birth to more intelligence, who will still have a hand on the wheel in time
